"To be a mech suit pilot in them days, you needed to be super comfortable with enclosed spaces and feeling like you was trapped. You needed to be as petite as possible. You needed to be OK with the idea of someone shoving jacks in your brain and spine. Lot of young soldiers in those suits, and most of 'em were women, but some were real skinny boys. Later generations of mech suits were re-engineered and specifically needed amputees to maximise internal space for hydraulic and equipment. And what with the war, there was no shortage of those. But the early suits, man, those pilots were crazy. Something about having the strength of a god and the ability to destroy at distance played hinkey with their heads."
