Trigger Warnings for Assault, Death, etc
The woman now known as The Sister Of Crows lived a small life on the outskirts of an isolated hamlet, with her twin sister and mother. Their rundown home was on the edge of the field where the villagers had long buried their dead. The men of the village, spurned by the mother who still grieved for her dead husband, whispered that the small family of women were all devil worshippers and witches. Little did those insecure and jealous men know how nearly right they were. The two girls shared a strong connection with each other, but where one was full of the joys of life and living things, of the songs of love and dancing, revelling in the turn of seasons and cycle of life, the other was taciturn and morose and felt more kinship with the occasionally seen and woefully malnourished ghouls that would sometimes forage the graves in the field as they passed through the area each year, than she did with the cruel and thuggish villagers who would whistle and jeer at her when she went into the market with her mother and sister. As they became young women, each sister realised that they could feel the whispers of magic in the earth and in the wind. Their mother told them that their father had once been apprentice to a far off Wizard, and had sought fame and fortune that he swore would transform their lives, joining some foolish quest with a wandering band of thieves that he had met in the tavern. He had never returned, never saw his daughters born, but had passed on his connection to the arcane world to them. The girls mother herself was a druid and privy to the dark secrets of nature, to the dank caves and rotten roots of tree and hill, the forgotten tunnels of the labyrinths and the merciless hunt of beasts and birds. She taught her daughters nto to fear their power but to embrace it. The one girl could bring life to barren fields, growing a small crop of wheat in a week. Her sister could see and hear the dead. Both began to have visions, for teh one it was of people's fates and fortunes, for the other it was always visions of Death. She found herself devoid of fear, possessed of an immense sense of self and of will. When the ghouls came back the next autumn, they seemed to be mesmerised by her, cringing before her like pet dogs, even the mighty, reeking King and Queen of the tribe, who gifted her rotting limbs as presents and a book. The book was a tome of spells, in a language unkown to her but which buzzed in her mind. She began to grasp the basic spells within the book, never knowing how she knew the words and items of power to use. The ghouls brought her dead things to experiment with, birds and rabbits to begin with. A dog. A child form the village that had died. She found she could make the smaller creatures move as if living, but could not truly bring life to their bodies. Not yet. Perhaps her Mother could help? but at once the visions of death increased in number and clarity. She began to be obsessed with the notion of bringing the dead, bringing her Father, back to the living, of talking with him, of mending her Mother's broken heart.
She knew what would happen long before it did.
Someone saw her from a distance, talking with the ghouls. Those jealous, frightened men came as a mob that night and murdered her joyous sister and her heartbroken mother and burned down their house and their crops. They drank and cheered as the flames flickered and sparked in the night. The one sister had been across the field, hidden in the night's veils, and when she howled in rage and anguish, and as her mind snapped, around her rose the tribe of Ghouls, and descended upon the men like frenzied wolves. None survived.
In the morning, the girl found a metal trunk inscribed with runes hat had survived the fire in the shell of the house. Within it were contained more books and trinkets and things that whispered of hidden power - a cloak of night and black feathers and old curses came to hand, and dressed in her mother's fears, the Sister went in to the village and poured the acrid contents of a bottle she had also found in that trunk, into the town's well. Within a week, the whole village was dead. The crows and the ghouls came and feasted on the bodies that she laid out in the marketplace. The ghouls died of the posioned meat too, but that was their place. The one Sister spoke to the parliament of crows that were unaffected by the poison, and bade them take her to a place where she could learn the secrets of Death. And in the hills and barrows surrounding that hamlet, she found her true calling.
Now she carries the skull of her sister, who whispers to her from the void, and a staff that focuses her power to curse the fates of those who would harm her, and even to blast them with black energies. She can animate the dead and bind the spirits of the departed to her mighty will. . The bones of the Men who sought to kill her now stand at her side, implacable warriors armed with rusted weapons she found in the ancient barrows of dead kings. Rotting creatures shamble at her behest. Ghouls flock to her labyrinthian lair, grovelling at her feet as she dominates their pathetic animalistic minds.
Her power grows with each night, and now she has found a new desire: ambition.
With an army of the Undead at her command, she can bring the peace of Death to the whole kingdom...
